Financial Literacy FAQ

What Financial Literacy topics are on the MPT?
The MPT covers Financial Literacy (Strand F) across Grades 3–9, including money concepts, budgeting, consumer awareness, financial planning, and interest calculations. Questions range from making change and estimating costs to calculating compound interest and comparing financial options.
Is Financial Literacy a big part of the MPT?
Financial Literacy was added to the Ontario curriculum in 2020 and is one of five math strands on the MPT. While it typically has fewer questions than Number Sense or Algebra, it’s still tested across all grade bands. The questions tend to be practical and context-based, involving real-world financial scenarios.
How do I prepare for interest calculation questions?
Know the simple interest formula (I = P × r × t) and understand how compound interest differs (interest on interest). Practice converting between annual, monthly, and daily rates. For the MPT, focus on setting up the calculation correctly — the on-screen calculator handles the arithmetic.
